Tibetan Wisdom on Compassion, Interdependence & Change

Updated: Apr 13

Whenever I read or hear of a good quote, I make note of it. Here are some that I have come across recently, which I found myself spending a few moments pondering over.

They are from The Tibetan Book of Living & Dying, by Sogyal Rinpoche. Thought of sharing some sombre nuggets of wisdom to give us a new sense of perspective in these strange times.

On Responsibility & Social Support:

"In today's highly interdependent world, individuals and nations can no longer resolve many of their problems themselves. We need one another. We must therefore develop a sense of universal responsibility... It is our collective and individual responsibility to protect and nurture our global family, to support the weaker members, and to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live."

On Challenges from Others:

"Always recognize the dreamlike qualities of life and reduce attachment and aversion. Practice good-heartedness towards all beings. Be loving and compassionate, no matter what others do to you. What they will do will not matter so much when you see it as a dream. The trick is to have positive intention during the dream. This is the point. This is true spirituality."

On Reflection & Change:

"...you must reflect continually on this: There is only One Law in the Universe that never changes- that all things change, and that all things are impermanent."

Thus, the key takeaway messages here are:

Collective and Individual responsibilities during these times;

Being Compassionate despite Unfriendly Odds

&

To Reflect on the fact Change is Inevitable.

So whatever uncomfortable or comfortable circumstances you are in, remember that they have the potential to morph.

Times like these give us a lot of opportunity for reflection, and sometimes certain difficult matters may arise. They can be from past traumas, unresolved feelings, or current stressors.

Whatever it is, know that they will change.
